The Partition Memorial Trust is dedicated to promoting remembrance, commemoration, and education about the enduring legacy of the British Empire on South Asian communities in Britain.

The idea for the Trust was first proposed at an event marking the 75th anniversary of the Partition of India on 12 August 2022 at City Hall. The Mayor of London’s initiative, The Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm, hosted the event. This was followed by a Remembering Partition project supported by the Untold Stories fund.

A further event was held at City Hall on 16 August 2023, where a digital and physical heritage trail in London was launched. The trail tells the story of Partition through the historical, political, and social activities of South Asian figures in London during the post-war period, linking these events to the Partition in India. The event also explored the development of ideas for a memorial.

As part of the Westminster Voices series at Westminster University, we hosted Mishal Hussain in conversation with Jasvir Singh CBE. Mishal spoke candidly about her grandparents’ partition story and reflected on colonial history and her journey to understanding and navigating her hisotry and identity as a British South Asian.

A further 'Remembering Partition' event was held on 27 June 2025 at the NLA London Centre (Guildhall), which highlighted the Heritage Trail on a scale model of London.

An advisory board has been established to support our longer-term ambition of creating a memorial or space in London to commemorate the human stories of the Partition of India, the British Empire, and the connections to communities in London, as well as the history of London within the context of public spaces.
