Partition Memorial Trust on BBC Sunday Morning Live
On Sunday 27 September 2026, our founder Sadiya Ahmed and her daughter Khizra joined hosts Holly Hamilton and Jason Mohammad on BBC Sunday Morning Live. They shared what inspired them to start the Partition Memorial campaign, and their relationship with the events of 1947, why establishing a permanent space for reflection, education, and remembrance in Britain is so vital, and highlighted our 2023 Empire and Partition Heritage Trail in London.
They spoke on how the memorial will create a permanent place in Britain to remember those who were lost, honour those who rebuilt their lives, and make sure their stories are remembered and documented as part of the wider colonial history of Britain and recognise how it has shaped the Britain we live in today.
For many of us, Partition lives within our families, in the stories our parents and grandparents told us, the homes they left behind, the people they lost contact with and the lives they went on to rebuild here.
Partition affected Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Christians and people from many other communities. Their experiences were different, but this history connects millions of families across generations.
The memorial will create a permanent place in Britain to remember those who were lost, honour those who rebuilt their lives, and make sure their stories are remembered and documented as part of the wider colonial history of Britain and recognise how it has shaped the Britain we live in today.
The memorial will be a place of unity, healing and shared remembrance. Somewhere families can come together, younger generations can understand the journeys that shaped them, and people with no personal connection to Partition can learn why this history matters to Britain.
There is something powerful in being able to tell British South Asians: your family’s story belongs in Britain’s story.
This is about remembering the generation before us, and about educating the generations to come.
