Child of The Divide - Wandsworth South Asian Heritage Month
For Wandsworth’s South Asian Heritage Month, we were proud to partner with Bhuchar Boulevard on a powerful series of events exploring the 1947 Partition through theatre, conversation and community storytelling.
At the heart of the programme was Sudha Bhuchar’s acclaimed play Child of the Divide , which tells the story of a young Hindu boy separated from his family during Partition and raised by a Muslim couple across the newly created border.
The programme began with intergenerational workshops at the R.O.S.E Community Clubroom in Nine Elms, bringing together adults, children and members of the Partition Memorial Trust community. With @pins_artist and @historyspeak through scene readings, conversation and creative activities, participants reflected on Partition, displacement, identity and the ways difficult histories continue across generations. A thank you to @happy_homes_fozia for providing refreshments and supporting the workshop!
This was followed by a dramatised reading of Child of the Divide, reuniting members of the production’s cast and creative team, accompanied by Arun Ghosh’s original soundtrack and live clarinet.
The evening concluded with a Q&A with the cast, creative team and guest speakers, including and Bhupinder Bhasin of the @pothohar_uk Association, opening up wider conversations about Partition, memory and why this history belongs within British classrooms and public life.
A big thank you to Bhuchar Boulevard and Suman and Sudha Bhuchar for programming a series of amazing events! And to Chetna Kapacee, Katherine Yexley, Vanessa, June and the ROSE Community Clubroom team for supporting and helping to create an incredible programme.
